Where to Stay in Paris: Best Areas, Prices & Tips

Paris is organized in twenty arrondissements that spiral outward from the Louvre, and the first ten or so are all within reach of the main sights by Metro or on foot. The choice of base is therefore about atmosphere and budget rather than access. Prices below are for a standard double in mid-season with taxes included; the Paris city tax (taxe de séjour) adds a few euros per person per night and is often charged at the hotel.

Le Marais (3rd and 4th): the most popular choice for good reason

Narrow streets, 17th-century mansions, independent boutiques, a strong café and bar scene, and a walk of ten to fifteen minutes to Notre-Dame, the Pompidou and the Seine. The 4th is busier and closer to the river; the 3rd (the Haut Marais) is quieter and more residential. Hotels are mostly small and boutique-style, which means limited rooms and early sellouts in high season.

Suits: first-time visitors, couples, anyone who wants to walk most places. Typical price: $180 to $320 mid-range, $350 to $600 for the better boutique hotels.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés (6th): classic Left Bank

Cafés with literary history, art galleries, the Luxembourg Gardens and some of the best food shopping in the city. Saint-Germain is polished and expensive, with a high concentration of four-star hotels in converted townhouses. It is a short walk to the Louvre across the Pont des Arts.

Suits: return visitors, couples, people who want a quieter evening scene. Typical price: $250 to $450 mid-range, $500 to $1,000 upscale.

Latin Quarter (5th): student energy, better prices

Next door to Saint-Germain but noticeably cheaper, the 5th has the Panthéon, the Sorbonne, the rue Mouffetard market street and a dense supply of two- and three-star hotels. The streets closest to Saint-Michel are tourist-heavy; walk toward the Jardin des Plantes for a more local feel.

Suits: budget-conscious travelers who still want a central Left Bank base, families. Typical price: $130 to $220.

The 7th: the Eiffel Tower and quiet evenings

Residential, grand and calm. You get the Eiffel Tower, the Musée d'Orsay and the Rodin Museum, and the rue Cler market street for groceries and casual meals. Nightlife is minimal, and the Metro network is thinner here than on the Right Bank, so expect a little more walking.

Suits: families, travelers who want views and quiet, anyone prioritizing the Eiffel Tower. Typical price: $200 to $380 mid-range, $450 to $900 upscale.

Louvre, Palais-Royal and Opéra (1st, 2nd and 9th): central and well connected

The 1st and 2nd put you at the geographic center, with the Louvre, the Tuileries and the covered passages of the 2nd within a few minutes. Prices are high near the Louvre and drop as you move north into the 9th, around the Opéra and the Grands Boulevards department stores, where there is a large supply of three- and four-star hotels and several Metro and RER lines, including direct trains to both airports.

Suits: short trips, shoppers, anyone who wants the easiest airport connections. Typical price: $160 to $280 in the 9th; $300 to $600 near the Louvre.

Champs-Élysées and the 8th: palace hotels

The 8th is where the grand palace hotels cluster. Le Bristol Paris on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré is one of the best known, with a garden courtyard and a rooftop pool. The avenue itself is commercial and crowded; the side streets toward Parc Monceau are elegant and quiet. Mid-range options exist but are not the area's strength.

Suits: luxury trips, special occasions. Typical price: $300 to $500 for four-star hotels, $1,200 and well above for the palaces.

Montmartre (18th): village feel on a hill

Cobbled lanes, the Sacré-Coeur, small squares and wine bars. Montmartre has some of the lowest hotel prices in central Paris, especially on its northern and eastern slopes. The hill is steep, the streets around Pigalle at the bottom are loud at night, and the Metro ride to the Louvre takes about 20 minutes. Stick to the streets around Abbesses and Lamarck-Caulaincourt.

Suits: budget travelers, repeat visitors, photographers. Typical price: $110 to $200.

Bastille and the 11th: eating and drinking

The 11th has more restaurants per street than anywhere in Paris, from traditional bistros to the new-wave wine bars around rue de Charonne and Oberkampf. Hotels are mid-priced and the Metro connections are excellent. Expect some late-night noise on the main streets.

Suits: food-focused trips, younger travelers, nightlife. Typical price: $140 to $250.

Best time to visit

May to June and September to early October have the best weather and the highest prices outside of major events. Paris Fashion Week (late February into early March, and late September into early October) and major trade fairs push rates up sharply for a few days at a time; check the dates before you book. July and August are warm, and many small restaurants close for part of August, but hotel prices often soften because business travel stops. November, January and February are the cheapest months and are perfectly good for museums and food.

Getting around

The Metro is dense, fast and runs until about 1:15 am (2:15 am on Fridays and Saturdays). Buy a Navigo Easy card and load tickets, or use a contactless card or phone where accepted. From Charles de Gaulle, the RER B reaches Gare du Nord and Châtelet in about 35 minutes; from Orly, Metro line 14 runs direct to the center. Taxis from the airports charge a flat fare to the city (roughly €56 to €65 from CDG depending on the bank of the Seine; less from Orly). Walking is often faster than the Metro for distances under 1.5 km, and the city center is compact.

Booking tips specific to Paris

Rooms are small, and that is normal. A Paris double of 14 to 18 m² is typical for two- and three-star hotels. If space matters, filter for 22 m² or more, or consider a serviced apartment.

Check for an elevator and air conditioning. Many hotels occupy 19th-century buildings of five or six floors. Older properties may have no lift or a tiny one, and air conditioning is not universal. Both matter in July and August.

Breakfast is rarely a bargain. Hotel breakfasts in Paris run €15 to €30 per person. A café around the corner will do it for a third of that.

Read the room description for bed type. A double may be two singles pushed together; a true double bed (lit double) is usually 140 cm wide, narrower than the US or UK standard.

Frequently asked questions

Which arrondissement is best for a first visit? The 4th (Marais) or the 6th (Saint-Germain) if budget allows; the 5th or 9th if you want to spend less without losing centrality.

Is it safe to stay near Gare du Nord or Montmartre at night? The immediate station surroundings and the Pigalle boulevard are busy and can feel rough late at night, but they are not dangerous in the way some older guides suggest. Pick a hotel a few streets away from the station and you will be fine.

How many nights do I need? Three nights covers the essentials; four or five lets you add a day trip to Versailles or a slow afternoon in a neighborhood.

Should I stay near the Eiffel Tower? Only if seeing it from your window matters to you. The 7th is lovely but quiet and less connected than the center; most visitors are happier in the 4th, 5th or 6th and visiting the tower once.
