Where to Stay in the Maldives: Best Areas, Prices & Tips

The Maldives has no neighborhoods in the usual sense. Each resort occupies its own island, and the decision is about which atoll, what kind of transfer, and whether you stay at a resort at all. The headline room price is also only part of the cost: transfers, meal plans and a stack of taxes can add 40 to 60% to the number you first see. This guide walks through the options, with prices per night for two people in a standard villa unless noted.

North and South Malé Atolls: closest to the airport

Resorts here are reached by speedboat in 15 to 60 minutes from Velana International Airport, which means no seaplane cost, late-evening arrivals are possible, and a four-night trip loses less time in transit. There are dozens of resorts across every price level, from older three-star islands to some of the most expensive overwater villas in the country. Reefs vary; the best house reefs tend to be on the smaller, older islands.

Suits: shorter trips, families with young children, travelers arriving late. Typical price: $350 to $700 for mid-range resorts, $900 to $2,000 for luxury. Speedboat transfer $100 to $300 per person round trip.

Ari Atoll: marine life and a seaplane view

West of Malé, Ari Atoll is known for whale sharks (year-round off the southern tip near Maamigili) and manta rays. Most resorts are reached by a 25 to 40-minute seaplane flight, which is memorable but adds $400 to $700 per person round trip and only operates in daylight. Reefs and snorkeling are generally better than in the Malé atolls.

Suits: divers and snorkelers, honeymooners who want the classic seaplane arrival. Typical price: $400 to $900 mid-range, $1,000 to $3,000 luxury.

Baa Atoll: the UNESCO biosphere reserve

Baa Atoll, in the northwest, includes Hanifaru Bay, where manta rays gather in large numbers between roughly May and November. Resorts here are fewer and skew upscale. Soneva Fushi, one of the first barefoot-luxury resorts in the country, is in Baa, and most of its neighbors follow the same low-density, big-island approach. Access is by seaplane or a domestic flight plus speedboat.

Suits: luxury trips, nature-focused travelers, anyone timing a visit for the manta season. Typical price: $800 to $3,500 and above.

The northern and southern atolls: quieter and farther

Atolls such as Noonu, Raa and Lhaviyani to the north, and Gaafu and Addu to the far south, are reached by domestic flight (45 to 90 minutes) followed by a boat. Prices are often lower for a comparable standard because of the distance, the islands are less crowded, and dive sites in the south are among the best in the country. The downside is a half day of transfers each way.

Suits: divers, repeat visitors, longer stays of a week or more. Typical price: $300 to $700 mid-range, with domestic flights adding $300 to $500 per person round trip.

Local islands: the budget alternative

Since guesthouses were permitted on inhabited islands, places such as Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, Dhigurah and Fulidhoo have built a real tourism economy. You stay in a small hotel or guesthouse for a fraction of resort prices, eat in local cafés, and take boat trips to snorkel, dive or visit a resort for the day. Rules differ from resorts: alcohol is not sold on local islands, and swimwear is restricted to designated bikini beaches.

Suits: budget travelers, divers, anyone who wants to see how Maldivians actually live. Typical price: $60 to $150 per night, often including breakfast. Public ferries cost a few dollars; shared speedboats $25 to $50.

Hulhumalé: for the first or last night

The reclaimed island next to the airport has a strip of simple hotels at $50 to $120. It is useful if you arrive late or have an early flight and do not want to pay resort rates for a night you will barely use.

Best time to visit

December to April is the dry season, with calm seas and the clearest water; it is also peak pricing, and the two weeks around Christmas and New Year can double rates and require minimum stays. May to October is the wet season: more wind, more rain in short bursts, rougher seas on some sides of the islands, and prices typically 30 to 40% lower. It is also when mantas gather in Baa Atoll and surf is best on the east. Many travelers find June to September perfectly good; just avoid promising yourself every day will be flat calm.

Getting around

You do not get around; the resort does it for you. Every resort arranges transfers from Velana International Airport, and you pay for them, often as a mandatory add-on quoted separately from the room. Seaplanes operate roughly from dawn to mid-afternoon, so a late arrival may mean a night at the airport hotel or in Hulhumalé. Within the atoll, resorts run excursions and dive boats; between islands, public ferries and shared speedboats serve the local islands.

Booking tips specific to the Maldives

Add up the real total. On top of the room rate, expect a service charge, the tourism goods and services tax, and a per-night green tax, which together add roughly 25 to 30%. Some sites include these in the displayed price and some do not. Compare only totals.

Choose the meal plan deliberately. Resort food and drink are expensive because everything is shipped in. Half board or all-inclusive often costs less than paying as you go if you plan to eat and drink at the resort, which on a private island you will. Bed-and-breakfast makes sense only on local islands or at resorts with many restaurants you want to try individually.

Beach villa versus overwater villa. Overwater villas are the postcard image and cost 30 to 60% more. Beach villas have direct sand access, more shade and are better with children. Many couples book two or three nights of each.

Confirm the transfer price before you book. It is listed in the fine print on most OTA pages, and it varies from $100 to over $700 per person. A cheaper room with a seaplane transfer can cost more overall than a dearer room with a speedboat.

Frequently asked questions

How many nights? Four to five nights is the sweet spot for a resort stay; a week if you combine two resorts or add local islands. Shorter than four and the transfers eat too much of the trip.

Is the seaplane worth it? For the view, yes, once. For a short stay or with small children, a speedboat resort in the Malé atolls saves money and time.

Resort or local island? Resorts for privacy, quiet and the full overwater experience; local islands for cost, diving and culture. Mixing both in one trip is easy and increasingly common.

Do I need to mention a honeymoon? It does not hurt. Many resorts offer honeymoon or anniversary extras if you tell them at booking and bring proof, typically a marriage certificate dated within six to twelve months.
