London invented the grand hotel and still does it best: afternoon tea at Claridges, the Savoy's American Bar, the Connaught's Mayfair hush. These are living institutions, not museum pieces, and worth a splurge night at least once.
Below the palace tier, London excels at character. Georgian townhouses in Clerkenwell, converted banking halls in the City, Soho and Shoreditch design hotels and the Hoxton brand, born here, give the city some of Europe's best boutique value.
Hotel rates fall sharply on weekends in the City and Canary Wharf, and rise everywhere in June and December. Everything central is a Tube ride apart, so prioritise the neighbourhood whose evenings you want to walk home through.
