About Bangkok
Bangkok is the best-value luxury city in the world. The Mandarin Oriental, Capella and the Four Seasons line the Chao Phraya river with rates that would buy a mid-range room in London, and the 5-star rooftop bars are open to anyone who dresses the part.
The city splits into distinct worlds: temple-studded Old Town along the river, the glossy malls of Siam and Ratchaprasong, the expat restaurants of Sukhumvit and Thonglor, and the creative cafes of Ari.
Traffic is the enemy, so stay on the BTS Skytrain or MRT line, or on the river where hotel shuttle boats connect to Saphan Taksin. Hostels here are among the best designed in Asia and cost less than $25.
Best time to visit
November to February (cool season, 25-32C, little rain); avoid April heat and September-October monsoon peaks
