About Paris
Paris still sets the standard for grand hotels: the palaces of the Golden Triangle (Le Bristol, George V, Plaza Athenee) and the legends of the Tuileries and Concorde (Le Meurice, Hotel de Crillon) remain the most coveted addresses in Europe.
The real story of the last decade, though, is the boutique boom. Velvet-draped, 30-room hideaways in the 2nd, 9th and 10th arrondissements, from Hotel des Grands Boulevards to the Hoxton, deliver Parisian style for a third of the palace price.
The city is compact and the Metro is dense, so an address in any central arrondissement works. Breakfast is rarely included at the low end; a croissant from the boulangerie next door is the better move anyway.
Best time to visit
April to June and September to October (mild weather, long evenings, fewer crowds than July-August)
Where to stay in Paris
The neighbourhoods our editors recommend, and who each one suits best.
Medieval lanes, Place des Vosges, galleries and the city's best boutique hotels.
Left Bank cafes, bookshops and the Sorbonne; refined hotels such as Lutetia and small family-run ones such as Hotel Monge.
Champs-Elysees, Avenue Montaigne couture and the palace hotels.
Grand monuments, Place Vendome and Le Meurice; design hotels around Grands Boulevards.
Hip bars and brasseries, Gare du Nord access, hostels and hidden boutiques.
Quiet residential streets with tower views, Trocadero terraces and family-friendly apartment-hotels.
