Where to Stay in London: Best Areas, Prices & Tips
Covent Garden, South Bank, Kensington, King's Cross, Shoreditch, Paddington and more: how London's neighborhoods compare on price, transport and character, plus the airport and Zone 1 details that save real money.
London is a city of villages joined by the Underground, and almost any neighborhood in Zones 1 and 2 will work as a base. What changes is the character of the streets outside your door and the price, which can vary by $100 a night for similar rooms a mile apart. Prices below are for a standard double in late spring or early autumn; UK prices include VAT, so what you see on the booking sites is usually what you pay.
Covent Garden, Soho and the West End: in the thick of it
Theaters, restaurants, Chinatown, the National Gallery and Trafalgar Square, all on foot. This is the most central base London has, and it is priced accordingly. The Savoy, on the Strand at the edge of Covent Garden, is the grand hotel of the district; most other options are boutique hotels and a scattering of chain hotels on the side streets. It is loud until late, especially in Soho.
Suits: first-time visitors, theatergoers, short trips. Typical price: $280 to $480 for four-star and boutique hotels, $600 and above for luxury.
South Bank and Waterloo: river walks and good value
The south side of the Thames between Westminster Bridge and Tower Bridge has the London Eye, the Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe, Borough Market and a continuous riverside walk. Hotels around Waterloo and Southwark are a mix of large chains and newer design hotels, often $50 to $80 cheaper than across the river. Waterloo is a major rail and Tube hub.
Suits: families, culture-focused trips, anyone who wants to walk along the river. Typical price: $190 to $350.
Kensington and South Kensington: museums and parks
White stucco terraces, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, the Natural History, Science and V&A museums, and a quiet, residential feel. Hotels range from grand Victorian townhouses to a dense strip of mid-range options around Gloucester Road and Earl's Court. The Piccadilly and District lines reach the West End in 15 minutes and Heathrow directly.
Suits: families, museum-goers, travelers arriving at Heathrow. Typical price: $200 to $420.
Mayfair and St James's: the luxury quarter
Between Hyde Park and Piccadilly, Mayfair and St James's hold most of London's five-star hotels, private members' clubs, galleries and tailors. The streets are quiet and immaculate, Green Park is on the doorstep, and prices are the highest in the city.
Suits: luxury trips, special occasions. Typical price: $600 to $1,500 and above; a few four-star hotels on the edges from $350.
Westminster, Victoria and Pimlico: sights and trains
Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace are within a short walk, and Victoria station has direct trains to Gatwick and the main coach station. Hotels around Victoria are plentiful and often good value; Pimlico, a few streets south, is quiet and residential with small hotels in Georgian terraces. Evenings are sleepy.
Suits: sightseeing-focused trips, Gatwick arrivals, families. Typical price: $160 to $300.
King's Cross and Bloomsbury: the Eurostar and the British Museum
King's Cross has been rebuilt over the past decade into a district of restaurants, canal-side squares and new hotels, with the Eurostar terminal at St Pancras and six Tube lines. Bloomsbury, immediately south, is the quiet university quarter around the British Museum, with a long tradition of mid-range hotels in Georgian townhouses.
Suits: travelers arriving from Paris or by rail from the north, budget-conscious visitors who want to be central. Typical price: $160 to $300.
Shoreditch and the City fringe: nightlife and street art
East of the financial district, Shoreditch has bars, clubs, street food, vintage shops and a run of design hotels that are lively at weekends. It is a 15-minute Tube ride from the West End. The adjacent City of London itself empties at weekends, and its business hotels drop prices sharply on Friday and Saturday nights.
Suits: nightlife, younger travelers, weekend bargain hunters in the City. Typical price: $150 to $300; City hotels from $130 at weekends.
Paddington and Bayswater: Heathrow in 15 minutes
North of Hyde Park, Paddington has the Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express to the airport, and Bayswater next door has one of London's largest clusters of budget and mid-range hotels in converted terraces of varying quality. Notting Hill's market and cafรฉs are a short walk west.
Suits: early flights, budget travelers, families who want the park. Typical price: $120 to $260; read recent reviews carefully at the lower end.
Best time to visit
May to September has the best weather and the highest prices, peaking in June and July around Wimbledon and the summer school holidays. December is expensive in the run-up to Christmas and quiet between Christmas and New Year. January and February are the cheapest months, cold but rarely severe. Spring and autumn shoulder weeks (April, October) offer a reasonable balance.
Getting around
Tap a contactless card or phone on the Tube, buses and trains; fares are capped daily, so you never pay more than the equivalent of a day pass for Zones 1 and 2. Buses have a flat fare and let you change for free within an hour. From Heathrow, the Elizabeth line reaches Paddington in about 35 minutes and continues to central and east London; the Heathrow Express is faster but much more expensive. From Gatwick, trains reach Victoria, London Bridge or St Pancras in 30 to 45 minutes. From Stansted and Luton, allow an hour or more by train or coach. Central London is more walkable than its size suggests; the Tube map exaggerates distances.
Booking tips specific to London
Zone 1 is worth paying for on short trips. The saving from Zone 3 or 4 is usually $40 to $70 a night and costs you 30 to 40 minutes a day in travel. For a two- or three-night trip, stay central.
Check for air conditioning in summer. Many older London hotels do not have it, and July heat waves are now common.
Breakfast is rarely included. A full English in a hotel can run $25 to $35; a cafรฉ will do it for half. Compare room-only rates.
Beware of Heathrow addresses. Hotels described as London Heathrow are 45 minutes from the center. Fine for a flight, not for a city stay.
Frequently asked questions
Which area is best for a first visit? Covent Garden or South Bank if budget allows; Bloomsbury, Victoria or King's Cross for a central base at a lower price.
Is King's Cross safe and convenient? Yes on both counts. The area was rough twenty years ago and is now one of the best-connected and most redeveloped parts of central London.
How many nights? Four nights for the main sights; five or six with a day trip to Windsor, Oxford or Bath.
Should I stay near the airport the night before an early flight? For a flight before 8 am from Heathrow, a Paddington hotel with the Elizabeth line works as well as an airport hotel and leaves you in the city for the evening. For Gatwick or Stansted, an airport hotel can save a stressful early journey.
