Where to Stay in Bali: Best Areas, Prices & Tips

Bali is bigger and slower to cross than most visitors expect. Traffic in the south is heavy, there is no public transport to speak of, and a drive from the beach to Ubud takes 90 minutes or more. Most trips work best with two bases: one in the south for beach and food, one in the hills around Ubud. Prices below are per night for two in the dry season, including the 21% tax and service that Balinese hotels add to quoted rates (shown as ++ on rate cards).

Seminyak: beach clubs, restaurants and boutique hotels

Seminyak is the polished heart of the south coast: a wide gray-sand beach with sunset bars, the island's densest concentration of restaurants, boutiques and spas, and a strong stock of boutique hotels and private-pool villas. It is busy and the streets are narrow, but almost everything is within a 15-minute walk or a short ride.

Suits: couples, first-time visitors, food and shopping, anyone who wants a comfortable base with options. Typical price: $80 to $180 for boutique hotels, $150 to $350 for private-pool villas, $300 to $700 for the beachfront five-star resorts.

Canggu: surf, cafรฉs and a younger crowd

North of Seminyak, Canggu grew from rice fields and surf breaks into Bali's digital-nomad capital. Expect specialty coffee, co-working spaces, gyms, beach bars and a nightlife scene that runs late. It is fun and well priced, but traffic on the single main road is bad and the beaches are more for surfing than swimming.

Suits: surfers, remote workers, travelers in their twenties and thirties, longer stays. Typical price: $40 to $120 for guesthouses and small hotels, $120 to $300 for villas.

Ubud: rice terraces, temples and jungle resorts

An hour and a half inland, Ubud is cooler, greener and quieter, with yoga studios, craft villages, the Tegallalang rice terraces and a river valley lined with some of the best resorts in Asia. The town center is congested with day-trippers; staying 10 to 20 minutes out in villages such as Penestanan, Tegallalang or along the Ayung River gives you the jungle setting people come for.

Suits: culture, wellness, couples, anyone who finds the beach towns too busy. Typical price: $40 to $120 for guesthouses and mid-range hotels, $200 to $500 for jungle resorts and pool villas, $600 and above for the top river-valley resorts.

Uluwatu and the Bukit: cliffs and surf

The limestone peninsula at Bali's southern tip has the island's best surf, dramatic cliff-top bars and temples, and small white-sand beaches reached by steep stairs. Hotels are spread out and you will need a scooter or driver for everything. Development is rapid; the newer cliff-top resorts and villa estates are among the most photographed places on the island.

Suits: surfers, honeymooners, travelers who want scenery over convenience. Typical price: $70 to $180 for guesthouses and mid-range, $250 to $800 for cliff-top resorts and villas.

Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa: the resort enclave

Nusa Dua is a gated, landscaped strip of large international resorts on the calmest, cleanest swimming beaches in the south. Everything is tidy and secure, there are water sports in Tanjung Benoa next door, and the airport is 25 minutes away. It is also the least Balinese-feeling part of Bali; you leave the enclave to see the island.

Suits: families with young children, resort-only holidays, conference travelers. Typical price: $120 to $250 for four-star resorts, $300 to $700 for five-star.

Jimbaran: a bay of seafood restaurants

Between the airport and the Bukit, Jimbaran has a sheltered bay with a famous strip of beachside grilled-fish restaurants, a handful of large resorts on the slopes above, and a quieter feel than Seminyak. It is a good compromise if you want to be near the airport and Uluwatu without staying in a gated enclave.

Suits: couples, short stays, travelers combining the Bukit with the airport. Typical price: $90 to $200 mid-range, $300 to $600 for the hillside resorts.

Sanur: calm, old-fashioned and well placed

On the east coast, Sanur has a long, sheltered lagoon beach with a paved promenade, a relaxed older crowd, and the main ferry port for Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida. Hotels are good value and the town is flat enough to cycle. Nightlife is minimal.

Suits: families, older travelers, anyone planning island trips to the Nusas. Typical price: $50 to $130.

Best time to visit

April to October is the dry season, with the best conditions in May, June and September. July and August are the busiest and most expensive weeks, along with Christmas, New Year and Easter; book popular villas and Ubud resorts two to three months ahead for those dates. November to March is the wet season: hot, humid, with heavy afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain. Prices drop 20 to 40%, and many travelers find it perfectly workable. Check the date of Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence in March, when the whole island shuts down for 24 hours, including the airport.

Getting around

There is no useful public transport. Ride-hailing apps (Grab and Gojek) work well in the south and in Ubud for cars and scooter taxis, though some areas restrict pickups. A private driver for a day costs $40 to $60 and is the easiest way to move between bases or do a sightseeing loop. Renting a scooter is cheap but legally requires an international driving permit with a motorcycle endorsement, and accidents are common. The airport (DPS) is in the south near Jimbaran; Seminyak is 30 to 60 minutes away depending on traffic, Ubud 90 minutes or more.

Booking tips specific to Bali

Watch for ++ pricing. Hotels and villas quote rates plus 21% tax and service. Most booking sites fold this into the total, but direct quotes and some listings do not.

Villas are often better value than hotels for two or more couples. A two-bedroom private-pool villa in Seminyak or Canggu at $150 to $250 per night usually includes daily cleaning and breakfast cooked in the villa.

Check airport transfers and breakfast. Many Balinese hotels include both; filter for them rather than paying separately.

Confirm the pool and the beach. Many Canggu and Uluwatu hotels are a scooter ride from the sea despite beach-sounding names. Read the map.

Budget for the tourist levy. Indonesia charges international visitors to Bali a small per-visit levy (around $10) on arrival or online. It is not a hotel charge, but it is easy to forget.

Frequently asked questions

Beach or Ubud? Both, if you have five nights or more: three by the beach and two in Ubud is the classic split. With fewer nights, pick Seminyak or Canggu for variety, or Ubud for calm.

Is Seminyak or Canggu better? Seminyak for dining, shopping and comfort; Canggu for surf, cafรฉs and a younger, more casual scene. They are 20 to 30 minutes apart.

Is Kuta worth considering? Kuta and Legian have the island's cheapest beachside rooms and a party scene aimed at young travelers. For most visitors Seminyak, a few minutes north, is a better experience for a little more money.

How far ahead should I book? For July, August and the holiday weeks, two to three months for anything with a private pool or a river view. For the rest of the year, a few weeks is enough.
