Free hotel upgrades aren't just for celebrities and loyalty program elites. With the right approach, any traveler can significantly increase their chances of getting a better room. Here are 9 strategies that consistently work.
1. Join the Hotel's Loyalty Program Before Booking
This is the easiest and most reliable method. Even the lowest loyalty tier often qualifies you for complimentary upgrades 'when available.' Booking.com Genius Level 2 (just 5 bookings) includes room upgrades at participating properties. AgodaVIP Gold and above also include upgrade eligibility.
Key insight: 'When available' upgrades happen more often than you'd think โ hotels frequently have empty premium rooms, especially mid-week and during shoulder season.
2. Book the Cheapest Room in the Category
This sounds counterintuitive, but booking the lowest-tier room gives the hotel maximum flexibility to upgrade you. If you book a standard room, they might bump you to superior or deluxe. If you book a suite, there's nowhere to upgrade to.
3. Mention Special Occasions
Honeymoon? Anniversary? Birthday? Mention it when booking (in the special requests field) and again at check-in. Hotels love creating memorable experiences โ a complimentary upgrade is an easy way for them to generate goodwill and glowing reviews.
4. Check In Late (But Not Too Late)
Arriving in the late afternoon or early evening means standard rooms may already be occupied by early arrivals. If the hotel is near capacity, they'll often upgrade late arrivals to fill premium rooms rather than leaving them empty.
5. Be Friendly and Memorable at Check-In
A genuine smile and brief friendly conversation with the front desk staff costs nothing but can unlock everything. These are real people with discretion to upgrade. Being the nicest guest they've checked in all day makes a difference.
6. Ask โ Politely and Specifically
Simply asking 'Are there any complimentary upgrades available for tonight?' works more often than you'd expect. Be specific: 'I noticed the corner rooms have a great view โ any chance one of those is available?' Front desk staff are empowered to say yes.
7. Book Direct for Better Treatment
Hotels pay 15-25% commission on OTA bookings (Booking.com, Agoda, etc.) but nothing on direct bookings. Some hotels reserve their best upgrade goodwill for direct bookers. Strategy: compare prices on HotelCompare, then check the hotel's own website โ if the price matches, book direct.
8. Travel Mid-Week and Off-Peak
Hotels are most generous with upgrades when occupancy is low. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights during non-holiday periods have the highest upgrade success rates. Conversely, trying to get an upgrade on a Saturday night in peak season is nearly impossible.
9. Leave Great Reviews
If a hotel upgraded you, leave a detailed positive review mentioning the upgrade. Hotels track which guests leave reviews. When you return (or when their system flags you as a reviewer), you're more likely to receive preferential treatment again.
What NOT to Do
Don't demand upgrades โ Entitlement kills your chances. Hotels remember difficult guests and flag their profiles. Don't lie about special occasions โ Staff can usually tell, and it poisons the well for genuine celebrants. Don't offer bribes โ The '$20 at check-in' trick is outdated and often unwelcome at quality properties.
