Booking.com vs Agoda: Which Is Cheaper? What We See in Our Comparisons

Booking.com and Agoda are both part of Booking Holdings, yet they frequently show different prices for the same room on the same night. Travelers ask us which is cheaper more than any other question. The honest answer is that neither is reliably cheaper, but the pattern of where each tends to win is consistent enough to be useful.

The short answer

In our comparisons, Agoda is more often the lower price in Southeast Asia, Japan, Korea and parts of the Middle East, particularly for resorts and for bookings made in its app. Booking.com is more often the lower price, or at least equal, in Europe and the Americas, and it has deeper inventory of small hotels, guesthouses and apartments there. The typical gap when there is one is a few percent; the outliers, which do occur, are 15 to 25% on the same room.

Why two sister companies price differently

Agoda grew up in Asia and built relationships with hotels and wholesalers there before Booking Holdings acquired it. Some of its inventory comes from bed banks rather than directly from the hotel, and wholesale rates leak into standalone prices. Agoda also runs more aggressive promotions: app-only prices, flash sales, coupon codes and AgodaCash credits. Booking.com relies mostly on direct hotel contracts, its Genius member discounts, and a very large base of independent properties in Europe.

Where Agoda tends to win

Resort hotels in Thailand, Bali, Vietnam and the Maldives, where wholesale inventory is common. Large chain hotels in Japan and Korea. Dubai resorts with high room counts. In these cases, especially when booked in the Agoda app while logged in, we frequently see Agoda match or beat Booking.com by 5 to 15%.

Where Booking.com tends to win

Independent hotels, B&Bs and apartments in Europe, where many small owners list only on Booking.com. Properties offering Genius discounts, which can be 10 to 15% at participating hotels. Anywhere you value free-cancellation flexibility and a clearly stated deadline; Booking.com's listings are the easiest to read on policy.

Things that look like price differences but are not

Taxes shown differently. Agoda often shows the room rate before taxes and fees in some markets, with the total appearing later. Booking.com usually shows the total earlier. A 15% gap that disappears at checkout is not a saving.

Different room or policy. The cheaper listing is often a smaller room, a non-refundable rate, or a rate without breakfast. Match these before comparing.

Currency conversion. Each site converts at its own rate. Compare in the hotel's local currency where possible.

What about Trip.com and Expedia?

Trip.com is strongest in China, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia and runs frequent coupons; it is the lowest of the four less often, but when it is, the margin can be significant. Expedia is competitive in North America and on flight-plus-hotel packages, and its Member Prices sometimes beat both Booking.com and Agoda on US and Caribbean resorts.

Service when things go wrong

Price is not the only difference. Booking.com's customer service is widely regarded as easier to reach and more effective in Europe, and because most of its rates come directly from hotels, changes are simpler. Agoda bookings sourced from wholesalers can be slower to modify or refund. For a non-refundable booking at a hotel you have not stayed at before, that is worth weighing against a small saving.

Do not pick a favorite. For every booking, open the hotel on both sites while logged in, match the room and cancellation policy, and compare the total with taxes.
